Reconnect with nature and history on TRANSMUTE’s upcoming Nature Walk, where we’ll explore a landscape rich with beauty, mystery, and legend. This is a wonderful trail in the Dark Peak of Staffordshire Peak District National Park, exploring the wooded hillslope of the Roaches and visiting the fairytale-like chasm of Lud's Church.
Lud's Church is a deep fissure through the Millstone Grit bedrock that was created by a huge landslip on the woodland slope above Gradbach in the Peak District National Park.
A hidden gem within The Roaches, Lud's Church is a deep chasm adorned with moss-covered walls and boulders. This natural rock formation has a mystical atmosphere, inspiring legends and folklore.
It's over 100m long and 18 metres deep. This place was sacred to Pagans in the early 15th century.
There is a rumour that the sun shines into Lud's Church at midday on the summer solstice, which could be the origin for the name, referring to the Celtic sun god "Lugh".
We can’t wait to have you join us for this free, all-ages walk at 11am, where you can immerse yourself in the magic of this sacred landscape.
