How does Free Comic Book Day / Comics Giveaway Day work?It's really quite simple. We open at noon. You show up, and you can take up to 1 copy each of all the free comics we have to offer. That is all there is to it.
How many comics can I take?
1 each of every free title we have. So that's around 50 official Free Comic Book Day titles, plus dozens of other free first issues from the past year we'll have out. It's a pretty good haul.
When does the line start?
We open at noon. The line starts whenever the first person shows up. We don't control that. That's on you.
Can I grab extras for someone who couldn't be there?
It's one title each per person. It's up to others to prioritize and it's up to you to share. The point is to get folks to come out to a comic shop. If they're not here, we'll, they're not really participating in the celebration.
Will Eightbar be open?
Eightbar will be open all day, and we'll be serving mimosas.
What if I show up late?
Quantities of these books are limited. There are no holdsies. No reserves. You show up, you pick from what is there. And enjoy!
Will there be a sale?
20% off ALL comics! Books, back issues, all of it!
What about the cereal and Saturday Morning Cartoons you used to do?
Yep! We'll have bowls of cereal and cartoons on the TV.
Hey, I'm from a library/school. Can I get some of those free comics from you to give away?
Nope. These are not donations. We pay for them. We do not need help giving them away, in fact we usually do not have enough to last the whole day. We receive tons of calls from libraries and schools to get the comics, but that's not how this works.This day is for going to a real store and celebrating the existence of printed comics for all ages.
So what's the story with Free Comic Book Day?
25+ years ago, the comics industry came up with the idea to get comic book publishers to print special comics to give away to customers in comic shops (again, they're not free for us - comic shops have to buy these books to give away to you).
The point of FCBD is to celebrate comic book shops and spread the love of comics by giving people the opportunity to try new titles out for free.
Why is there now a Free Comic Book Day and a Comics Giveaway Day?
Distributor nonsense resulting from the implosion of the comic distributor monopoly Diamond Comics. There are now different distributors for the major comics publishers. One has the rights to use Free Comic Book Day, the other doesn't.
And yes, this is the mother of all the other "store" days - Record Store Day, Independent Bookstore Day, Local Yarn Store Day, Free Pet Store Day, etc!
