The Salisbury Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir, Midlothian, VA, sings weekly for the 11:00 worship service and provides music for the annual Service of Lessons & Carols, Holy Week services, and other special events. In recent years they have been invited to sing at Duke Chapel, NC, the historic Bruton Parish Church, Williamsburg, VA, St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, Scotland, the Washington National Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall in New York. The choir is directed by Dr. Mark Patterson and accompanied by Laura Candler-White.
Dr. Mark Patterson is a nationally acclaimed composer, conductor, and teacher. He is the Director of Music and Composer in Residence at Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, Virginia, and the Founding Artistic Director of the Midlothian Men’s Chorus. Dr. Patterson received his PhD in Fine Arts-Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University, and Master of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.
The Cotswold Male Voice Choir is one of the most established and popular male choirs in Gloucestershire. Originally founded as a works choir in 1949 at Smith’s Aviation – now GE Aviation in Bishops Cleeve – the choir is now in its 77th year. The choir welcomes men of all ages and musical ability so long as they can learn to sing in harmony. It is a registered charity whose aim is “to promote music through public performance”. It sings at every type of venue throughout Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds and beyond. It sings in churches, cathedrals, concert halls, village halls and (of course) in local pubs!
Through its concerts and public performances, the choir has raised many thousands of pounds for other charities and community causes. The choir is now based in Cheltenham but also draws in members from Gloucester, Tewkesbury and many of the surrounding towns and villages in the county.
The “Cotswold” has a deservedly high reputation for entertaining audiences with a wide repertoire of songs that will thrill all ages. There’s nothing quite like the soaring sound of a male choir singing classic hymns like Morte Criste or the Welsh popular anthem, Calon Lan, to stir your soul or the sweet harmonies of a love song like “Let It Be Me” to add a touch of romance to a concert.
James Willshire – Music Director
The choir will be conducted by James Willshire. James is no stranger to public performances. He is an experienced music teacher and an outstanding concert pianist in his own right. Heralded for performances of “spectacular musicianship and technical brilliance” (The Scotsman), “evangelizing urgency” (International Record Review) and “freshness and lucidity” (The Herald Scotland), James Willshire has performed at the BBC Proms, live on BBC Radio 3, the Royal Festival Hall and many other prestigious venues.
