Feb 25 – Howard Wiley on Bay Area Jazz and the Movement for Civil Rights
Bay Area jazz star Howard Wiley—”the irrepressible Oakland saxophonist ready and able to celebrate everything that makes Cali fabulous, sexy, funky and soulful” (San Francisco Chronicle) is known for his explosive performances on saxophone and drum set, and bold musical projects that connect jazz music to important movements in Black American history and culture. His recordings include the acclaimed Angola Project, inspired by 1950s recordings from Angola State Prison, and recent projects have fused gutbucket jazz with soul, gospel, and rock music that is part of the California cultural soundscape. Wiley served for two seasons as SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, and has toured internationally, recording and performing with artists including Miss Lauryn Hill, Sheila E, Cory Henry, Christian McBride, and Chester Thompson. He is a founding member of the Bay Area collective Black London.
To order lunch from the JazzCaffè, call 510-654-0148 to place your order before 10:30am the day of the program.
