Met FRANK, kort voor Frankenstein, onderzoekt choreograaf Cherish Menzo de figuur van het monster, voorbij het louter fysieke: het monsterlijke als belichaming van wat ons beangstigt én fascineert. Vervorming wordt haar choreografisch leidmotief, een middel om de dans te ontwrichten en de structuur los te gooien. De voorstelling fabuleert op de Baka Gorong, de plek waar tot slaaf gemaakte mensen in Suriname heimelijk Winti-rituelen uitvoerden. Samen met performers van verschillende generaties creëert Menzo een ritualistische, apocalyptische en carnavaleske wereld, die de flikkering oproept van vroege horrorfilms.

With FRANK, short for Frankenstein, choreographer Cherish Menzo examines the figure of the monster, beyond the purely physical: the monstrous as an embodiment of what frightens and fascinates us. Deformation becomes her choreographic leitmotif, a way to disrupt the dance and unsettle its structure. The piece conjures the Baka Gorong, the place where enslaved people in Suriname secretly performed Winti rituals. Together with performers of different generations, Menzo creates a ritualistic, apocalyptic and carnivalesque world that summons the flicker of early horror films.
