Overview:Step into the world of rhythm, culture, and craftsmanship in this immersive 2-day Framedrum Making Workshop. Over the course of two days, you’ll not only create your very own framedrum and beater, but also dive into the rich history and stories behind this ancient instrument, which has been used for thousands of years across cultures for ritual, celebration, and music-making. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have crafted your own drum, and we’ll culminate with a group jam session, where you’ll bring your creation to life in rhythm with others.
Day 1: Crafting the Drum
On Day 1, you’ll begin by learning about the history and significance of the framedrum—its origins in ancient cultures, from the Sufi mystics to the Celtic traditions, and its role in storytelling and ceremony. As we dive into the stories, you’ll begin the hands-on process of crafting your drum, from shaping the frame to stretching the skin and securing it. This is a step-by-step journey into craftsmanship and self-expression, where you’ll form a unique drum that’s as much a reflection of your creativity as it is of the cultural heritage of the instrument.
Day 2: Crafting the Beater & Jamming
On Day 2, we’ll focus on creating the beater that complements your framedrum—this tool will help bring out the full range of sound and rhythm in your new instrument. We’ll finish off with a deeper dive into the techniques for playing the framedrum, including different rhythms, strokes, and traditions. By the end of the day, we’ll gather in a circle for a jam session, where you’ll play alongside others and experience the joy of making music with your own hand-crafted drum.
