Four years ago, the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini sparked the beginning of the women-led Woman, Life, Freedom revolution, a movement that brought people around the world together and united people across the political spectrum around a common demand: women’s freedom, dignity and equality, and an end to Iran’s authoritarian theocracy.
Four years on, the desire for freedom and change inside Iran has not disappeared. People took to the streets again in January, and their demands were met with a violent crackdown by the Islamic Republic regime. The war has since made it even harder for people inside Iran to mobilise and raise their voices. Our responsibility is to help create the space and international solidarity they need to be able to mobilise again.
As part of the continuation of this movement, we are connecting the struggle of Iranian women with that of the women of Afghanistan, whose lives and freedoms continue to be brutally restricted under Taliban rule.
This year, we are proud to join forces with Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand to launch its international campaign on human rights violations in Iran. We will also screen Nasrin, a powerful documentary about human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and her ongoing work defending those persecuted by the Islamic Republic regime.
Nasrin offers a window into the work of Iranian activists inside Iran who have relentlessly advocated for freedom and human rights, paying an enormous price but refusing to be silenced.
A room will be available for children, although it may not be supervised. Parents/guardians remain responsible for supervising their children.
A contribution is appreciated to help cover the film licence fee and refreshments. All donations raised will go towards these costs, with any remaining funds supporting future events organised by the Iranian Solidarity Group.
📍Note: To keep these events welcoming and focused on solidarity, we kindly ask attendees to refrain from bringing flags or wearing political symbols that may create tension or distract from the purpose of the events.
We look forward to seeing you there.
