Nota Bene is delighted to invite you to a concert that explores the vibrant partnership between choir and keyboards. In this programme, voices and two pianos come together in a rich musical dialogue, revealing the colour, power and intimacy of choral music accompanied by piano duet and two-piano textures.

In this programme, Nota Bene brings together voices and two pianos in a distinctive musical dialogue. At its centre are two contrasting choral works: the Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky and Nänie by Johannes Brahms.

Written in very different musical languages, Brahms’ richly Romantic setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem reflects on loss and remembrance, while Stravinsky’s choral symphony from 1930 places choir and instruments on equal footing in a clear, rhythmically driven and architecturally structured work.

Alongside these works are a cappella pieces by Arvo Pärt and René Clausen, offering moments of stillness and reflection, contrasted with the lively instrumental writing of the two-piano suite Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud.

We are joined for this concert by Wellington-based pianists Catherine Norton, a specialist in vocal repertoire who performs widely in New Zealand, and Gabriela Glapska, a collaborative pianist and chamber musician active in contemporary, ballet and operatic repertoire.

Across the programme, contrasting musical styles and textures create an arc from introspection to affirmation, exploring the common human journey from loss to consolation and joy.
