Founder’s Day Event – Living History: WWII Edition
Vallejo Goes Wild as War Ends, declared the Times Herald on April 15, 1945, describing the spontaneous celebrations in the streets of Vallejo as news of the end of WWII spread through the city. Workers from Mare Island, who had just arrived for the swing shift, immediately turned around, crossing back to Vallejo to join the exuberance.
That day marked the end of a tremendous effort by workers and Navy personnel who built over 400 ships and repaired countless others during WWII—efforts that played a pivotal role in achieving victory. And, on Saturday, September 14, you can relive this historic time by attending a unique Founders Day tour program, “Living History: Commemorating Mare Island’s WWII Effort”.
During this 3-hour program, you will journey back in time with guided tours to key spots in the Historic Core, where the Interpreting History Acting Troupe will bring the shipyard’s WWII stories to life. You’ll meet our own Wendy the Welders as they describe their shipyard work, learn how vessels were built from a group of shipbuilders, and hear first-hand accounts from those connected to the ill-fated USS Indianapolis, lost at sea on the last day of the war.
The action begins and ends at the Admiral’s Mansion, where you’ll have the opportunity to interact with the cast, enjoy beer or wine, and even meet Admiral Farragut himself.
Tickets for the walking tour are limited—reserve yours today!
