About this Event
Founded in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson and colleagues, ASALH is the oldest and largest learned society dedicated to researching and sharing the history, culture, and contributions of people of African descent. Its mission is to “promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community.” Chartered in October 2016, ASALH South Florida serves our region by bridging university learning with community empowerment, hosting lectures, programming, and community events that honor the Woodson legacy.
This year’s Founder’s Day marks a significant milestone in our regional membership and community growth. We are honored to feature Dr. Maurice J. Hobson, Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Georgia State University and author of With Faith in God and Heart and Mind: A History of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (UNC Press, 2025), as our keynote speaker. Dr. Hobson’s scholarship examines the historic role of Omega Psi Phi in movements for education, civil rights, and uplift, offering deep insight into Brotherhood as an engine of social transformation.
