About this Event
"An intimate, intensely dramatic film that holds us in its grip like a page-turning novel. Except it's all true." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
StepStones for Youth is excited to invite you for a film screening and reception on October 21 at Innis Town Hall.
"Foster" (2018) is a revealing first-hand look at the foster care system, as seen through the eyes of young people within the system and those working tirelessly to support them. Oscar-winning filmmakers Mark Jonathan Harris and Deborah Oppenheimer collaborate on this riveting documentary to provide a close-up look at the foster care system and its impacts on the lives of children, young adults, and families. Oppenheimer and Harris go beyond the sensational headlines and stereotypes to take an unprecedented look at an often misunderstood world, and upend some of the most enduring myths about foster care and those involved in the system.
Filmed and researched over a span of four years, "Foster" follows judges, social workers, foster families, and youth caught up in this sytem to explore a complex subject with a critical yet compassionate eye.
Following the screening, there will be a moderated discussion on ways the issues featured in the film resonate and are addressed in Ontario. We hope to engage the audience in a thought-provoking discussion on the foster care system and the challenges faced by young people exiting care.
All guests are invited to stay after the talk for a networking reception with an open bar and a chance to meet StepStones staff and fellow attendees.
