Christians throughout the world celebrated the Feast of Theophany, also known as Epiphany, on January 6, 2026. This great feast commemorates the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and the manifestation of the Holy Trinity. In connection with this celebration, Saints George and Alexandra Orthodox Christian Church will once again hold a special outdoor service for the Blessing of the Waters of Fort Smith at the Arkansas River. This service will take place on Saturday, January 17, at Harry Kelly Park, located at the Garrison Avenue Bridge, beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m.
This year marks the twenty ninth consecutive year that this sacred service has been celebrated in Fort Smith. At the conclusion of the prayers, a ceremonial cross will be cast into the river as part of the traditional rite. Services of this kind have been celebrated by Orthodox Christians throughout the world at this time of year for more than two centuries.
All area pastors, their congregations, and members of the wider community are warmly invited and encouraged to attend and to share in this joyful and prayerful event.
