Fort Negley & Edgehill Lecture & Walking Tour

Join us for a free community event exploring the rich Black history of the Edgehill neighborhood and Fort Negley.

Fort Negley was built by enslaved and free Black people on behalf of the US government to protect the city of Nashville and the entire Western Front against Confederate attack. Thanks to this fort and the builders and defenders of it, the Civil War came to its end. A UNESCO site of memory on the routes of enslaved people, this fortification is truly one of a kind and it's right here in Nashville!

After Sunday service, we will gather in the theater at Fort Negley Visitor Center for a short lecture by Dr. Angela Sutton, Research Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University, followed by a screening of What Happened to Bass Street, a documentary highlighting the area’s past. An optional guided walking tour of Fort Negley will be available afterward for those interested. All are welcome!

You must RSVP separately for the 2pm lecture/documentary screening and the 3pm guided walking tour. RSVP for either or both. Fewer spaces are available for the walking tour than the lecture/screening.
