About this Event
Led by Dr. Michael Oakson, Head Pro at Pickleball Haven, and assisted by Ed Ju, the Forehand Drive Masterclass is designed to transform the most important groundstroke in pickleball into a reliable offensive weapon. Together, Dr. Oakson and Ed break down the forehand drive through detailed instruction, biomechanics, and real gameplay application.
This clinic focuses on elevating technique, swing mechanics, footwork efficiency, and strategic shot selection so players can win more points consistently. Participants rotate through four targeted stations:
- Footwork & Spacing – Learn to create proper distance from the ball and set up a powerful, balanced hitting position.
- Unit Turn – Build a strong and efficient load position to maximize power and control.
- Swing Path & Follow-Through – Develop a repeatable swing pattern that optimizes topspin, speed, and consistency.
- Offensive Sequencing & Application– Apply the drive in live scenarios and learn how to build points around strong, high-percentage forehand offense.
From technique nerding to strategic decision-making, this clinic equips players with the skills needed to step on court with confidence, hit bigger shots, and take their forehand drive to the next level.
Agenda
Welcome & Introduction
Info: The clinic begins with a 20-minute welcome and introduction, where participants will meet Dr. Oakson and Ed Ju, receive a take-home outline covering all four stations, and be introduced to the first station, Footwork & Spacing.
Station 1 – Footwork & Spacing
Info: Players will rotate through Station 1, focusing on efficient footwork patterns to get to the ball quickly. This station emphasizes how proper footwork creates the space necessary to generate power on the forehand drive, with drills designed to improve movement, positioning, and balance.
Station 2 – Unit Turn
Info: Participants will practice loading and rotating the body effectively to maximize power and consistency on the forehand drive. Drills will help players naturally integrate the unit turn into their swing.
Station 3 – Swing Mechanics
Info: Players will practice swing speed to generate fast, controlled swings, swing path by extending fully through the ball instead of finishing short, and follow-through by targeting specific body spots to develop a consistent and repeatable forehand drive.
Station 4 – Offensive Sequencing & Strategy
Info: Players will practice where to drive the ball on the opponent and the court, learn how to poach off a partner’s drive to create more offensive opportunities, and apply drills designed for real-world point-building.
Wrap-Up & Final Q&A
Info: The clinic concludes with a 5-minute wrap-up and final Q&A session, reviewing key takeaways from all four stations and providing tips for continued practice and improvement.
