About this Event
This online workshop is open to registration officials in England and Wales and GRO staff dealing with marriages. Our aim is to ensure all register offices have the opportunity to receive this training. The aim of this training is to raise awareness of forced marriage and how best to support potential victims.
The workshop will include sessions on:
• The role of the Forced Marriage Unit and the legislation around forced marriage
• Understanding the risks to victims
• Spotting the signs of a potential forced marriage
• The referral process in involving other professionals to safeguard child and adult victims of forced marriage
• A case study from a social worker
• The testimony of a survivor of forced marriage
Register office staff can play an essential role in spotting the signs of forced marriages and assist in preventing them from happening by involving necessary statutory safeguarding bodies. The FMU’s training workshops will attempt to build a cadre of registration officers across the country, who in their respective local authority will:
• Be the FMU point of contact for escalation of forced marriage cases;
• Champion forced marriage best practice;
• (Not required, but where possible) Deliver training to new colleagues likely to work on forced marriage cases.
Please sign up with your work email address only. Course pre-reading materials and a calendar invitation containing the link to join the workshop (on Microsoft Teams) will be issued approximately a week before the event.
