10 spots available
Stinging nettle and ground ivy. Toxic Plants (look more for info about other walks)
Foraging for Kids will be divided into 5 different segments. We will learn and explore different plants during five walks in 5 different places. You can choose 1 or all 5 walk times.
What will we be doing?
We will go for short walks and look for specific plants. Kids will learn how to identify them and how to use them. In these walks we WILL NOT forage but just learn to identify the plants. Each child will receive the info page about the plants we learn, they will need to draw the plants, learn the ways to use the plant and get some recipes. We will have some games to learn and remember plants better (some plant tasting may be involved). We will also learn some other important things that are needed for foraging like foraging safety and toxic plants.
What do children need to bring?
They need to bring something to write and draw with. Just regular pencil is ok. They can bring their magnifying glasses. It would be great if they would have their own clipboard. It will be easier for them to draw and write.
Remember to dress accordingly to weather. If the day of walk will be rainy, we will reschedule the walk.
What will we learn?
March 30 - Cattails and spring greens. Safe foraging and places where to forage. (Boonsboro Nature trail at the library)
April 13 - Violets, dandelions and other flowering plants. How to observe the plants and get to know them better. (Battlefield Bible Church)
April 27 - Plantain, mullein, and other leaves. The names of plants and botanical names. (Washington Monument State Park)
May 11 Stinging nettle and ground ivy. Toxic Plants (C&O canal Taylor's Landing)
June 1 Rose family plants. (Devil's Backbone Park)
Cost: $10 per one segment or $40 for all 5. This is a cost per child. Parents are welcome to join our walk with the child and if there are younger kids they can stay with parents (but with no distractions to those who are learning).
Please make a payment by Paypal to [email protected]. Please let me know the name and age of your child who will attend the walk, your email, which segment you choose.
Message me if any questions to [email protected] or here on Facebook.
