'For The Sake of the Song' - A Night of Acoustic Music curated by Sam Doores and Good Earth Records
The Bay St. Louis Little Theatre is proud to present, along with Good Earth Records & T-Fat Entertainment, an evening celebrating original songs performed by different singer-songwriters from New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
'Americana' is an amalgam of American music formed by the confluence of the shared and varied traditions that make up the musical ethos of the United States of America, with particular emphasis on music historically developed in the American South.
This show will feature Sam Doores, of the Alt-Country group - The Deslondes, from New Orleans. Having released two full length albums on Nashville's New West Records label, The Deslondes are one of the best touring Americana groups on the scene. Sam was also a founding member of Indie-Folk-Rock group, Hurray For The Riff Raff, along with Alynda Segarra. These days, Sam tours regularly with The Deslondes and puts on songwriter showcases in New Orleans every few months. He also started a local record label, Mashed Potato Records.
Sam is bringing a few friends with him from the Crescent City, including singer-songwriter, Sabine McCalla.
~~'Sabine McCalla can handle her own. After years of providing backup vocals to bands around town, she’s finally ready to push her own voice to the front of the stage.
Making the move to New Orleans […] McCalla found herself welcomed into a flourishing scene of supportive, fearless artists, gravitating around this young community that nourishes itself with country-folk and street culture, agreeable musicians, dancers, visual artists of all colors and shapes. It’s a scene where old-time music and lifestyle find a new breath, are brought back and celebrated each day with a fresh perspective and a hunger for the fleshed-out beauty of grassroots Southern music.
[…] Her songs tell the stories of lost souls and broken hearts with moanful laments. They summon the strength and comfort of old spirituals. Her stripped-down style, either singing a capella or with minimal guitar or vocal accompaniment, bears a force that evokes the most haunting of the early Lomax recordings of historic American music.' Offbeat Magazine - July 2018

~~ Joining the show is our friend Will Coppage. Mississippi Delta native, Will is known for reenergizing the rural sounds of Delta blues, honky tonk, bluegrass, folk and Southern rock through his original music to create his sound, “Ya’ll Music.” His lyrics steer emotions from bitter tragedy to celebration, keeping his audiences dancing and entertained all night long. Coppage, a USAF Veteran, has performed his music all over the world. Following his father’s footsteps, he took up bass and piano before switching to guitar in 2001 to form North Carolina’s, Willie & Me. Coppage departed W&M in 2008 to focus on songwriting by completing both a BFA and MFA in Creative Writing/Poetry. He performed on banjo and resonator with the Delta String Band, a MS roots ensemble until Summer 2023. Building a reputation of a songwriter and high energy performer, in 2024, Coppage began heavy touring across the South. He currently resides in Greenville, MS with his wife of 15 years, 8 year old daughter, and his broken-down dog, Townes.
~~ From the Mississippi Gulf Coast, The Wolf River Band will be sharing their musical talents with us! This duo of Sarah Holloway and Cooper Greene will bring us their fresh rockin' country roots sound. Accompanying Cooper's guitar, Sarah plays the fiddle in the band and together they make sparks fly on stage. You're in for a treat with these folks, y'all.
~~We will have the wonderful and incredibly talented Tasche De La Rocha joining us !! We're so happy she's coming up from New Orleans to The Bay for this show !!
"Her music is a mix of Soul, Jazz, and personal style that will transport you to another time and place, while still lacing in threads of modern flare. She strives to push boundaries with melody, lyrical content and collaboration. Tasche is inspired by greats such as Billie Holliday, Leonard Cohen, and Edith Piaf as well as her ever-changing musical community full of friends from around the world. Ms. de la Rocha has toured the United States many times over as well as Europe for the first time in summer 2015. Tasche’s debut album Gold Rose was released in April 2017." -soundcloud
Her latest release with her band - Tasche and the Psychedelic Roses came out in 2023 and it is a wonderful, welcomed departure from her previous records.. It's a wide mix of rock, punk, & folk and it is one of our favorite releases of last year .
~~ Also coming from New Orleans is multi-instrumentalist Aurora Nealand. Aurora is as talented as they come and we can't wait for her to share her musical talents with us in Bay St. Louis!!
'No one encapsulates the idea of musical shape-shifting as adroitly as Nealand does. Her ability to bring whatever tools are needed to a song or musical project, seems to have begun in a childhood spent on the California coast and in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. That’s where she taught herself to play piano and a range of other instruments. Her parents — “hippies” she calls them — encouraged curiosity and musical appreciation but discouraged rule-making. That meant Nealand was free to do whatever she liked as a musician — and she came to like everything.
From there, Nealand moved eastward — first to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, then New York, then Paris. She settled in New Orleans in 2004 and seven years later, made a head-turning debut at Preservation Hall with her band The Royal Roses. Their concert, featuring the music of Sidney Bechet, included dancers and top notch musicianship, making the evening a one-of-a-kind foray into performance art. Or perhaps, it was just another night in the New Orleans Bechet knew. In New Orleans, he wrote, “the music was as natural as the air.”
On the live recording that followed, Nealand added her own coda, “I wanted to convey the spirit his music inspires in each of us today — a vitality, a sense of exploration, a fierceness of individual personality, a need to dance or clap or shout.”
Nealand is now working on a project that will include the voices of veteran traditional jazz musicians. There’s still a lot to learn, she says, but that happens on and off the bandstand. “If you want tradition to really be a living tradition you have to let artists live within it.” On yet another Royal Roses album, titled, Comeback Children, Nealand includes a quote from composer Gustav Mahler that burnishes her philosophy to a brilliant shine:
“Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.” ' - My Spilt Milk (2019)
~~ We are so happy to have local Bay St. Louis musician Aaron Levenson joining us as well!
Aaron was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, and first cut his teeth playing music by hitting notes loudly and incorrectly on his mom's piano. Saxophone and guitar soon followed, and a life-long love of music was born. He first became Southerner when he moved to Bay Saint Louis in 2010, planned to stay a few years and just never left. Aaron was introduced to the local music scene by playing in the local '90s cover band Hello Newman, and made the leap into songwriting with his friend and musical collaborator Kevin Parrington in 2022 when they formed the Americana band Crow The Culprit. His song "Pontchartrain" was a 2023 Mississippi Songwriter of the Year finalist, and he is currently working on an all original EP with his band.
