With the 250th birthday of the United States of America coming this July, it is a great time to learn some of the dances that have stood the test of time through the 400 years of history as a group of colonies and eventually a country. Folk dancing is a form of living history, so we will learn some of the traditional dances that our ancestors danced, as well as some of the more modern dances that were composed based on these traditional dances. The figures have remained basically the same through the centuries, but often the names changed, the music changed, and how the figures fit together have been altered slightly.
If you joined us last semester for our classes that emphasized English Country Dancing, things will feel very familiar, but also not quite the same. If the set step isn't your favorite move, you will find that as we move away from ECD, it is used a bit less frequently, though it never disappears. We also hope to help you improve your country waltzing, as well as possibly introduce the Polka a little.
Because these dances are not always simple, we plan these classes for those who are 10 and above and have a desire to learn this timeless skill. For those who are still preteens, it will always be easier if they choose a partner who is mid-teens or above. Parents, please encourage your kids toward this, especially if it is encouraged at the time the sets are being formed. Mixing the ages makes learning easier for everyone!
$5 per dance or $25 per family
