Mathis & Adams
Two career musicians, one from Europe, the other from the West Coast of the U.S., join forces somewhere in the middle, both now residents in upstate New York’s Finger Lakes Region. A common love of acoustic instruments, traditionally rooted music, and the creation of original songs mold something fresh, yet familiar.
Mathis Haug was born in Germany, lived in the south east of France and gleaned sounds from the depths of the United States, where he now resides. He has the look of an adventurer, one you'd meet on an American road, somewhere in the Appalachians or on the banks of the Mississippi. Three-day beard, cap, blue eyes, guitar slung over his shoulder. And his voice is superbly hoarse, as if nourished by the grain of the journey. Mathis Haug has always had a quest for wide open spaces and multicolored sounds (blues, but not only!). But if America strongly inhabits a large part of his work, it is above all the result of the crossbreeding that has shaped him since childhood.
“ ... World Citizen. Mathis is a true melting pot of nationalities and musical styles.” Rolling Stone
"Powerful voice, warm and rough, excellent guitar playing, irresistible show made of soul, folk and blues ... " Sud Ouest
"Singer, storyteller, poet, musician Mathis is all of these, both in his texts and in his diction. His music is like a river, more or less calm, that we travel down in a mixture of apprehension and well-being... " Soul Bag
Scott B Adams has forged a career out of capturing landscapes and snippets of history from the Adirondacks, The Finger Lakes & New York state, and turning them into songs and lush, acoustic instrumental music compositions. His music has been featured on the PBS Special, “Adirondack Wild” as well as on various syndicated radio shows such as NPR’s “’Echoes” and “The Folk Sampler”.. He's played at The White House and with various orchestras such as the Syracuse Symphony, The Binghamton Philharmonic and the Buffalo Festival Orchestra. Scott has performed for New York State Governor Pataki and at the dedication of “Pine Knot” Camp on Raquette Lake when it became a National Historic Landmark. His love for the Adirondacks and The Finger Lakes are apparent through his songs and music
“Adams is an accomplished solo guitarist…his instrumentals are at times driving, at times haunting, as he freely uses minor keys, alternate tunings and slide-playing styles. He has a Pete-Seeger-like commitment to nature. His song, “Adirondack Wild” has John Denver’s passion, and his voice quality reminds you of early Gordon Lightfoot. So if the former was considered Colorado’s poet laureate, and the latter the same for Canada, then I nominate Scott B Adams as our poet laureate.”
Chuck Agonito, The Finger Lakes Times
“This work is so refreshing you can almost feel the mountain air against your face. Listening to the Adirondacks is a unique achievement-evidence once again that Adams has taken the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”
Jon Ulrich - The Ithaca Times
