About this Event
Shape colorful paper into beautiful, lasting flowers.
Artist Frances Martinez Rogers carries on a craft passed down from her aunt, Dolores, an original artist at Utah's Living Traditions Festival. Formally apprenticed to her aunt, Frances honors this heritage by adapting classic techniques and sharing this folk art with new generations.
This workshop connects participants to the custom of using paper blooms to celebrate. You'll learn the history of the craft, from its origins using tough, hand-dyed corn husks to the ease of today's malleable paper. Frances will share clever modern tricks to cut, gather, and construct paper blooms, such as using dental floss for a stronger hold. This relaxing process will allow you "to go to that place of color and paper and just be," and you'll take home your own vibrant paper flowers!
