Folk Arts as Intangible Cultural Heritage Conference

One-day conference explores the current place of folk arts in England in relation to the UK-wide implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage
This will be an inspiring day for practitioners, educators, arts organisations and academics who are engaging, or want to engage, with Intangible Cultural Heritage/Living Heritage discussions in England.
Noting the lack of unified ICH initiatives in England, the conference will provide inspiration for future projects and engagement. Through our keynote, invited speakers and presentations we will bring English perspectives into conversations with views and experiences from across the UK and beyond.
Keynote: Simon McKerrell (Glasgow Caledonian University) - Understanding the past in the present: what future for living heritage in a (dis)United Kingdom?
Other speakers include:
Matthew Cheeseman and Kay Dunn – Beyond ratification: building living heritage infrastructure for folk arts in England
Jonathan Karkut and Julie Scott - Inventorying as a Gateway
Emma Melville (Joint Morris Organisations)
Grace Redpath - From display to dance: longsword and the museum
Hardeep Sahota – Bhangra as living heritage: archive, transmission and recognition in England
Daniel Carpenter (Heritage Crafts) in conversation with Chloe Middleton-Metcalfe
Michael Davidson - Intangible Cultural Heritage and Citizenship
Panel session with Peter Hewitt (Scotland), Bláithín Mhic Cana (Northern Ireland), Kate Neale (Cornwall) and Jordan Prince Willams (Wales)
Posters:
Francesca Appleton - Living Traditions and Honoured Roots: Contemporary Lindy Hop Traditions in London
Ella Paul - Ballads in Care Homes
Organisers: Vaughan Williams Memorial Library in collaboration with Esbjörn Wettermark and Access Folk (University of Sheffield)
Buffet lunch and unlimited tea and coffee are included. Vegan and gluten free food will be provided; please inform us of any further dietary requirements when booking.
Tickets £40
