This month we are pleased to welcome Dr. Patrick Jung. The Green Bay area and the Fox River Valley were well outside the main theater of combat during the Black Hawk War of 1832. Nevertheless, as the war unfolded, local militia companies were organized in case the war spread to these areas. Moreover, the Menominee Indians of northeastern Wisconsin had long been enemies of the Sauks and Meskwakis who composed Black Hawk’s band, and the Menominees formed an entire battalion that traveled to the principal theater of the war and participated in the fighting. This talk will provide a general overview of the Black Hawk War, events in Green Bay and the Fox River Valley during the summer of 1832 when the war was fought, and details about the Menominees and their participation in the conflict.
