Welcome to our November FMV Book Club meeting. This month, we mark the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Nov 25) with a novel that goes straight to the heart of survival, silence — and reclaiming voice.
November’s Book Pick: The Bread the Devil Knead by Lisa Allen-Agostini
Genre: Literary Fiction
From: Trinidad & Tobago
About the book:
Alethea Lopez is a sharp-dressed 40-something woman who seems to have it all under control — but she’s hiding deep trauma and living with intimate partner violence. When she witnesses a murder that hits far too close to home, her carefully curated life begins to unravel.
Told in vibrant, musical Trinidadian Creole, this novel is intimate, emotionally raw, and deeply grounded in Caribbean womanhood.
Why we chose it:
Gender-based violence affects women around the world — but it’s often depicted in abstract statistics or sensational headlines. This novel brings it back to the body. To the voice. To the silence.
Alethea’s story is not unique — and that’s what makes it urgent. In reading her, we reflect on how cultural shame, economic precarity, and colonial legacies continue to shape how violence is normalized and how women survive it.
We read this in solidarity with all women who live in fear, have lived in fear — and those who find their way out.
Haven’t read the book? Come anyway!
Our discussions are always open — whether you’ve finished the book, skimmed it, or just want to learn. We’ll talk about the themes and the global context, together. Bring a friend.
