For October, we turn our attention closer to home.
October's Book Pick: Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius
Genre: Literary Fiction/Coming-of-Age
From: Sámi (Sápmi / Sweden)
About the book:
When nine-year-old Elsa witnesses the brutal killing of her reindeer, she is told to stay silent. Years later, the memory continues to haunt her as she navigates life in a Sámi community facing racism, harassment, and growing threats to its traditional way of life.
Set in northern Sweden, Stolen is both a coming-of-age story and a powerful exploration of Indigenous identity, belonging, and resistance.
Through Elsa's eyes, Ann-Helén Laestadius offers a deeply personal and moving portrait of contemporary Sámi life.
Why we chose it:
At FMV, we believe it is important not only to learn about communities across the globe, but also to better understand the histories and realities that exist closer to home.
Although the Sámi are the Indigenous people of Northern Europe, their stories are often absent from mainstream conversations. Stolen sheds light on the discrimination, cultural erasure, and environmental pressures that continue to affect Sámi communities today, while also celebrating resilience, family, and cultural pride.
As readers in the Nordic region, this book invites us to reflect on whose histories are remembered, whose voices are heard, and what it means to protect culture and identity in the present day.
Haven't read the book? Come anyway!
Our discussions are always open - whether you've finished the book, skimmed it, or simply want to learn. We'll explore the themes, history, and cultural context together.
