THE HISTORY OF MASONS' HALL
Masons' Hall was built between 1785 and 1787 in Richmond's historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood. It was constructed by members of Richmond Lodge No. 13 (later renumbered), making it the oldest building in the United States built specifically for Masonic purposes that is still continuously used for that purpose today.
The cornerstone was laid on October 12th, 1785, just months after the cornerstone ceremony for the Virginia State Capital. The construction was guided by two men who would become giants of American history:
- Edmond Randolph - Governor of Virginia, first United States Attorney General, and one of the architects of the early American government.
- John Marshall - future Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

A MEETING PLACE DURING THE BIRTH OF AMERICA
Before Richmond had many public buildings, Masons' Hall became one of the city's most important gathering places. It was used not only by Freemasons but also by the community for important civic events. In the years following the American Revolution, Richmond's leaders gathered there to discuss issues facing the new country. Citizens even met in the hall to prepare Virginia's delegates for the Constitutional Convention, where the future structure of the United States government was debated. This means the building predates the ratification of the Constitutionand was part of the political atmosphere surrounding the creation of the United States!
THE HALL THAT SERVED RICHMOND
Over its long history, Masons' Hall wore many hats:
COURTHOUSE -
For a period, portions of the building were used for legal proceedings, including meetings connected with Richmond's early courts.
PUBLIC GATHERING SPACE -
At a time when Richmond had a few large meeting spaces, Masons' Hall hosted community gatherings and events.
HOSPITAL DURING THE WAR OF 1812 -
During the war of 1812, the building was used as a hospital - meaning that sickness, pain, recovery, and death all became part of the building's story.
Masons' Hall survived one of Richmond's darkest moments - the evacuation and burning of the city in 1865 as the Confederacy collapsed. A long-standing story claims that when Union forces entered Richmond, the building was spared in part because the Union officer overseeing the area was himself a Freemason and recognized the significance of the hall.
Whether viewed as history or legend, the fact remains: while much of Richmond suffered destruction, this nearly 80 year old structure survived,
