About this Event
"Brother Scoundrels of Early Florida: The West Florida Rebellion of 1804"
The early United States was a time of statesman like George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson. It was also a time of scoundrels, men who use the nationβs independence to seek their own fortunes, including three brothers in the early 1800s living in Spanish West Florida. Living on the border of Spain and the United States, the Kemper brothers turned a personal business grievance into a rebellion against Spanish rule and a bid for independence. David Head illustrates the complex loyalties of the region and U.S.-Spanish relations in this program.
