FLiCKERFEST 2026 - 35th International Short Film Festival On Tour

Flickerfest is thrilled to be back in Cairns for 2026 bringing the magic of cinema from across Australia in our much loved Best of Australian Shorts and 35th Anniversary Retrospective Shorts programmes, screening at the Cairns Botanic Gardens, Friday 24th & Saturday 25th July. 7:30pm each night.
Flickerfest celebrates 35 years in 2026 and is proud to be Australia’s most respected short film festival with both Oscar® and BAFTA accreditation, recognising the globally recognised short film competitions Flickerfest presents.
Over the past 35 years, since its establishment in 1991, the festival has identified talent and launched the careers of hundreds of filmmakers. Supporting them to become established voices, who now lead the way in the Australian Film Industry, both at home & internationally.
🍿 BEST OF AUSTRALIAN SHORTS: Friday 24th July 7.30pm, honor our unique identity and culture with the Best of Australian Shorts. Don't miss the moving drama Little Pumpkin directed by talented Queenslander Jessica Trinity Fisher; Writers In Love by QLD born and raised writer Grace Isabella Malouf & producer Jacqueline Ann Kerwick; also features alongside the moving drama Tuesday Tuesday, which won best female director at Flickerfest 2026 and stars Peter Phelps (Stingers). Packed Away gives us the directorial debut of actress Michala Banas (Always Greener, Mcleod's Daughters) who shines both on and off camera in this personal and intimate drama and actor Matt Day (Rake) writes and directs the comedy Baby Shower, starring the legendary Hugo Weaving in a dark comedy about family friendship and unexpected happenings at this familiar ritual, whilst The Suit, is a sharp and hilarious comedy featuring award winning actress Kat Stewart and much-loved comedian Colin Lane delivering big laughs with plenty of bite.
🍿 FLICKERFEST 35th ANNIVERSARY RETROSPECTIVE: Saturday 25th July 7.30pm, celebrate incredible talent who have launched their careers at Flickerfest, with a host of Australian stories in our 35th Anniversary Retrospective Shorts programme that looks back at the festival history and the early works of some of our Australian film industry’s biggest names.
The Flickerfest's alumni reads like a who's who of the Australian industry and our 35th Anniversary Retrospective Shorts programme presents some standout award winning films featuring exceptional talent both in front of and behind the camera, with some of Australia’s most respected directors sharing the screen.
Don't miss Crossbow by David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, Christy) starring Joel Edgerton; Tulip by Rachel Griffiths (Muriel’s Wedding) starring Bud Tingwall; Spider by Nash Edgerton (Mr Inbetween); Oscar nominee The Eleven O'Clock by Derin Seale, starring Josh Lawson and Damon Herriman; The Girl Who Swallowed Bees by Paul McDermott (filmmaker, comedian, TV host) starring Pia Miranda; Brother by Oscar-winner Adam Elliott (Harvie Krumpet); Mimi by Warwick Thornton (Samson & Delilah,The New Boy) starring David Gulpilil, Sophie Lee and Aaron Pedersen; Florence Has Left The Building by Mirrah Foulkes, starring Jackie Weaver; Julian by Matthew Moore starring Ed Oxenbould & Leon Ford; and The Meek by Joe Brumm (Bluey creator). All are directors who have gone on to lead our film industry both domestically and internationally.
