About Our Speaker:
Scott Sobel listens to clients, understands their businesses, and applies ability and imagination to devising strategic plans to meet their goals. He is both an award-winning public relations practitioner and a prize-winning former investigative broadcast journalist at the major market and network levels; beginning his career at The Miami Herald in the early’70’s, then working in broadcast markets and for TV networks during the next twenty years in Jacksonville, Tampa, Denver, New York City, and filing his last TV story in Boston. He brings both backgrounds to bear while counseling clients, along with a passion to exceed client expectations.
Scott is now semi-retired in Delaware but represents select law firm clients including the tax law firm of Caplin & Drysdale and additionally the law firm Crowell & Moring for pro bono media and government relations counsel concerning the wrongful conviction of Crosley Green in Florida. He is the media and government relations counsel for the Tamarack Aerospace Group providing market leading fuel saving, safety and sustainable technologies. He is also an active member of the Braver Angels DE Alliance that promotes civility and communications tools for both “Red” and “Blue” US citizens and is occasionally tapped by news media for commentary on crisis communication topics.
He has advised an eclectic list of clients, including: law firms and law schools, universities, charities, manufacturers of aviation and pet food products, associations, healthcare businesses, hospitals, financial businesses, and entertainers. Scott manages the most sensitive public relations and media relations challenges for clients, many of whom are involved in litigation or government investigations. Simply put, he gets high-profile clients in the news and keeps them out of the news based on his intimate understanding of journalism practices and a working knowledge of the law and government.
Prior to founding the SASPR consultancy. His last agency affiliation was with Kglobal in Washington, DC. Scott began his public relations career as a regional director for Tele-communications, Inc. and AT&T Broadband, where he handled public relations, media and government relations assignments, and also led national media training teams. Scott’s background features the management of his own Washington, DC-based, public relations agency, Media & Communications Strategies. Before that, he led dozens of practitioners in three countries for GlobalLearningSystems and was a senior vice president and litigation and crisis team leader for Levick Strategic Communications.
His experience is worldwide, for example, he managed media relations for: the Catholic and International Baptist churches in the U.S. and internationally; top-tier law firms and corporations; represented individual clients like former AT&T CEO C. Michael Armstrong and financial notable Michael Farr; celebrities like Rosie O’Donnell, for example, during her Gruner and Jahr trial; and created programs and managed crises for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation; and Tamarack Aerospace Group. Scott organized trade missions for Egyptian and Indian legal and business associations in the US and a discrete business development initiative for Croatia.
He frequently represents clients seeking to build relationships with the U.S. Congress and other government agencies. He has, for example, developed local, national and international relationship-building corporate social responsibility events and programs while partnering with dozens of members of congress and reaching tens-of-thousands of students interested in STEM careers, promoting aviation role-model Barrington Irving. Scott sees his role as not only a PR strategist and counselor, using media psychology practices to persuade audiences, but also as an educator. He has enjoyed his time as an adjunct journalism professor and a frequent lecturer/author about both journalism and public relations topics.
Scott holds a BA in Journalism/Political Science from the University of Miami and an MA in Media and Communications Psychology from the Touro University system.
When he is not working… Scott enjoys his large family, will sport dive when possible (his last dive was off the coast of Gitmo, while consulting pro bono for the US Navy – he has been a treasure and cave diver for decades). He golfs, kayaks, fishes and binge-listens to different musical artists while driving to assignments: Springsteen, Aretha, Garth Brooks, Leonard Cohen and Annie Lennox are favorites.
