LITTLE LIBARY INFORMATION:

For about 50 years the British Phone Booth on the 400 Block of Flagler Avenue has stood for generations to wonder how it got there, pose for photos, and serve as the meeting spot to explore Flagler Avenue and New Smyrna Beach.

The Flagler Avenue Business Association (FABA) has taken on the phone booth’s restoration and reuse as a lasting community gift to mark its 40th anniversary. Our plan is to hire a local contactor to restore the phone booth to its former glory. The scope of work includes repairing damage to the metal structure, replacing all the glass panes, restoring the door so it is again operable, and adding a timed locking devise so it can serve a community asset. In short, we plan to join a network of over 1,400 communities across the world that have converted vintage British Phone Booths into “Little Lending Libraries.”

From our research we have learned our phone booth was manufactured between 1955-1965 during the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Our Little Lending Library will focus on children’s books. We expect families to visit the booth on a walk, visit to the beach or just passing by, then return it when finished reading. The booth would be open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm.

To reach our goal, we need your help. Our renovation, outfitting and book budget is over $30,000. The funds will cover restoration, renovation, books and a maintenance fund. To reach our goal we are asking you to join us in donating to this worthy community project. To thank you for your support and donation, we have devised multiple recognition programs to enshrine your support and generosity. All the phone booth’s books will feature a stamp (like in a library book), thanking our milestone sponsors and individual donors. This way, all supporters, large or small, will have recognition for their support.

Milestone donors of $500 and more will have their names included on our dedication plaque on the booth and on all book stamps. Donors under $500 will be recognized by having their names in individual books – one book for every $50 increment. In addition to new books, a network of community groups have committed to collecting read books in great condition to add to the Little Lending Library’s inventory. FABA plans individual fundraisers to ensure the longevity of the project and its continued upkeep and operation.

To make this community project happen, your financial support is vital. This community effort is just that, run by volunteers from the community with a love of New Smyrna Beach. Please join us in this worthy project and make your donation today. We plan to dedicate the New Smyrna Beach Little Lending Library during the 39th Annual Light Up Flagler on Friday December 3. Thank you for your continued support of Flager Avenue and New Smyrna Beach as a neighbor and advocate, and thank you in advance for your support of this worthy community project.

Sincerely,

Sherman Reid, Shawana Graham
