Fiver is songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and researcher Simone Schmidt. Schmidt has been carving out a new lyricism in Country and Folk music for nearly two decades, largely evading the logic of the recording industry. Their lyrics refuse sloganeering, deploying wit and poetry to detangle the knot of our human condition under late-stage capitalism. Their songs are widely covered, and their recordings have received four Polaris Prize nominations. Lately, Schmidt performs live solo and with the Fiver Trois, featuring Jeremy Costello (bass) and Nathan Doucet (drums), and Liam Tyner (lap steel). If pressed for a musical style, the Fiver Trois fit most neatly under the genre of Country Prog. They rearrange the music around the strength of the songs with dynamic energy and palpable affection. The live performance integrates tight songs with sprawling improvisational passages - there’s no stepping twice into the same show. Fiver’s new full-length Cleaning House will be released on You’ve Changed Records on July 10, 2026.
