Five Years of Dance Rhythms - A Nanyang Journey
Five Years of Dance Rhythms – A Nanyang Journey 《五年舞韵~踏歌而行的南洋之旅》 uses dance as a language to take audiences on a journey through time, revisiting the footsteps of Singapore’s development. Rooted in the history and culture of Singapore’s Chinese community, this production draws its inspiration from the “Red Headscarf Women” of our history.
Through the language of dance, we tell the story of the women who journeyed south to Nanyang in search of a livelihood, dedicating their lives to hard work and making silent yet invaluable contributions to their families and society.
Through our movements, we are transported back to the Singapore River of the past. Like an elegant young woman, the river gently whispers her stories, bearing witness to the vibrancy, hopes and changes of early Nanyang. The production also brings audiences into the simple and heartwarming rural life of Singapore before the 1970s—a time filled with modest pleasures and cherished memories. From local theatre steeped in the distinctive Nanyang spirit, to childhood songs sung in different dialects, each chapter carries the footsteps of our forebears, preserving their struggles, cultural heritage and heartfelt memories.
Finally, we present Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, as the spiritual symbol of the entire production. Unafraid of wind and rain, it continues to bloom with resilience, reflecting the indomitable spirit of the people of Singapore. From a humble fishing village to a modern international city, this blooming national flower bears witness to the nation’s growth and symbolises the perseverance, resilience and determination of generations of Singaporeans who have continued to move forward.
Let us follow the rhythm of the dance as we look back upon our history and give thanks for the sacrifices of those who came before us. And as we move to the rhythm of a new era, may we continue our journey forward towards a brighter future.
Five Years of Dance Rhythms – A Nanyang Journey – following in the footsteps of our forebears, dancing the memories of Nanyang, and celebrating the spirit of Singapore through the changing tides of time.
