This lecture will take a closer look at how the story of American theatre has been told and who has been left out of that story. Focusing on a range of artists and contributors from the 18th and 20th centuries, we will explore patterns, not just of absence, but of repeated and systemic erasure. In other words, it’s not just that these women were overlooked; it’s that the systems shaping theatre and American history deliberately excluded and erased them. These women navigated the limitations placed on them, and in many cases, they bravely pushed back against those limitations. Their work reflects ongoing negotiations with systems of gendered and racialized power, especially when it comes to access to production, publication, and recognition. This lecture will also question the idea of simply “recovering” these artists.
The First Tuesday Lecture Series will be held in the Stenstrom Student Center Atrium on Main Campus, streamed online, and made available later as a recording on our YouTube Channel.
