Founded in 1994, First Night State College has become a beloved community tradition, drawing 10,000–15,000 people each year to downtown State College for a joyful, family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration. Known for its spectacular carved ice displays, live ice-carving artists-in-action, and a full lineup of musical and theatrical performances in theaters, places of worship, and public spaces, the event offers something for everyone.
Signature elements include the 5K Resolution Run, hands-on art, craft, and performance workshops, a lively Grand Procession with life-size puppets, live reindeer, and both indoor and outdoor resolution sculptures and activities. Guests of all ages delight in these traditions as they welcome the new year together.
As an alcohol-free alternative to typical New Year’s Eve festivities, First Night State College creates a fun, uplifting, and safe atmosphere for families of all kinds. The event runs from noon to 10 p.m. on December 31, bringing energy and economic vitality to downtown during what is traditionally a slow time of year for local businesses.
