The day honors students that who are categorized first-generation or are the first in their families to attend college. Generally, students are considered first-generation if their parents do not have four-year degrees. To celebrate the holiday, USC Sumter is planning a week-long celebration with a variety of events for students November 4 – 8. The week will culminate on Friday, November 8, 5 – 9 p.m., with a First-Generation Block Party that will be held in USC Sumter’s parking lot at 200 Miller Road. The Block Party is a free community event that will feature a DJ, dancing, and food trucks.
The community evening is hosted by Central Carolina Technical College, Morris College, and USC Sumter. This is the second year that the Sumter area campuses have teamed up to honor their first-generation students.
“We are very excited to once again celebrate the students, faculty, and staff that are first-generation college students on all the Sumter campuses. The communities served by our institutions are populated with families whose children are the first in their family that will be graduating with a four-year college degree,” said Lisa Rosdail, USC Sumter Director Opportunity Scholars Program and Upward Bound. “We hope the community will come together with us for this big celebration.”
