About this Event

First Fridays Reading Series and Open Mic is proud to feature Tina Cardona with Michael Galko opening on Friday, August 7, at Inprint House!

Tina Cardona is a community maker for Houston poets as a co-founder of hotpoet.org. She is a psychotherapist, yoga teacher, earth advocate, dog guardian, soothsayer, mother and partner, and is also in a long-standing, conflictual relationship with poetry. You can find her wandering at dawn and at dusk muttering with trees.

Here is a poem from Tina:

Tia Speaks

I am buried in Spring mud. Sweet,
reedy dew clings to my sockets, stains
rivulets formed by petrified tears.

Rotted tooth and tongue form an unguarded
portal through which my desires kick the hollow decay, and
soar with guttural blackness.

Crow's beak shouts, my shadow ricochets off suburban
sidewalks, lands with mafioso talons. Extorts
attention from subjugated landscapes.

No powerlines,
false borders,
smashed lips,
stillbirths,
or steel boxes
could prevent my debut.
Welcome my hunger.
Feed my angst.
I'll teach you how never to say
'mandame'.

Michael J. Galko will be our opening Pop-Up poet.

Michael J. Galko is a retired scientist and active poet from Houston, TX. He is the artist responsible for ‘haiku house’, a residential art installation consisting of hundreds of original wood-burned and painted haiku. He was a finalist in the 2020 Naugatuck River Review and the 2022 Bellevue Literary Review poetry contests. Recent poems appear in Spillway Magazine, Atlanta Review, Silk Road Review, and Plainsongs, among other journals.
