RUMINATE
Solo Exhibition by Annie Brace
This exhibition gathers together pieces that took the long way home—paintings started months to years ago, paused, and returned to after sitting in the “almost” pile.
Like the word itself, Ruminate carries two meanings: to chew slowly, as moose and caribou do, and to turn something over and over in the mind. Both describe the way these works came to be.
Edges may remain visible—layered paint, taped borders, scraps reborn into finished forms—because process is as much a part of the story as completion. In these paintings, Alaska’s familiar shapes—mountains, spruce, fireweed, float planes—are reconsidered, layered, and reassembled until they breathe differently, like thoughts chewed on until they reveal a new flavor.
Ruminate invites viewers to linger, to slow down, to see value in the unfinished as much as in the polished. This collection doesn't hyper focus on a concise visual voice, but instead celebrates the pause, the second look, the quiet reconsideration that eventually lands as something whole.
