A word from the artist:
Art, music and writing have always been pursuits I didn’t struggle with at school. Don’t ask me about Calculus, chemistry and memorizing physics theorems.
As a child, my favourite Christmas and birthday presents were pencils, paints, paper, and books. What a nerd! No doubt I still am!
I met my husband in 1969 when I was at a Cambridge teaching college, and he was in the USAF. I was actually a music major. My dream job in 1972 was being a music and art teacher at two American elementary schools in Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire. Years later, I was part of the Stanley British Primary School program in Denver Public Schools.
In my roles as classroom teacher/intern mentor and teacher coach/trainer, I always encouraged teachers to include art, drama and music at every opportunity. Students in my class never got in trouble for illustrating their work.
After retirement we had an empty house (most of the time), and plenty of space to create an art studio, albeit in the basement. So watercolour painting became my new interest. I soon became involved with a small online watercolour group who are still my friends and tutors, led by an amazing watercolourist, Deanna Sergent. We are in America, England, and Australia.
My husband and I lived in the Denver area for about 50 years, and it’s along and complicated story about how we ended up in Salina. We definitely like the slower pace of life … and less frantic driving … and we do have some family here.
I love the work of so many artists, particularly the looser painters, which I strive to be, if I could just get over my passion for using little skinny rigger brushes. As well as the obvious: Monet, Van Gogh, Sisely, Manet, etc., I admire the painting of LS Lowry, JMW Turner, Brian Cook, Deanna Sergent, and Chris Forsey. Deanna in particular has been a huge influence, mentor, and encourager.
My husband and I are recyclers and we are always on the hunt for frames that we can touch up and repurpose. I did invest in my own mat cutter. It has made life easier.
I hope that you enjoy looking at my pictures. They’re not perfect and probably don’t follow all or any of the ‘rules’ for watercolor painting, but I’m always learning new things, and watercolour painting has brought me joy.
