Travel through 250 years of American music at September First Friday. 🎹
Pianist, composer, and scholar Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr. joins us for Who Hears Here? 250 Years of American Song, an original performance celebrating the singularity and rich history of American music through sound.
A 2022 Guggenheim Fellow and professor emeritus of music at the University of Pennsylvania, Ramsey has performed at the Blue Note, Harlem Stage, and the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. His work extends beyond the stage: he co-curated the National Museum of African American History and Culture's exhibition Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment and served as a consultant for the Emmy Award–winning HBO documentary The Apollo.
As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, spend an evening considering the music that has accompanied, reflected, and shaped its history.
First Friday also includes access to the Barnes collection and "Just Us," our annual restorative justice exhibition. Cocktails and light fare will be available for purchase, and the Garden Restaurant will be open for dinner.
