About this Event

This is a rare full-day experience designed for ceramic artists and serious enthusiasts — part pilgrimage, part workshop.

We'll begin the morning at the Princeton University Art Museum for a guided tour of the Toshiko Takaezu exhibition, exploring the work of one of the most influential ceramic artists of the 20th century. From there, we carpool (~30 min) to the Takaezu Studio in New Jersey for an afternoon of hands-on Raku firing led by Brooke Auchincloss.

Participants will actively contribute to the firing process — loading, tending, and reducing — not just watching. Nicholas will be on hand throughout to assist Brooke and support participants at every stage. Lunch is provided: local pizza, salads, and beverages.

What to bring: Participants should arrive with 2–3 bisqued ceramic pieces. The ideal form is tall and narrow — approximately 3" diameter × 9"+ height — made from a groggy mid-to-high fire clay body. We'll work together on glazing before the firing day so your pieces are ready to go.

What to expect: Raku firing is an outdoor, atmospheric process involving fire, heat, and reduction smoke. Dress for it — your clothes will likely pick up some smoky scent. What comes out of the kiln is one-of-a-kind: unpredictable, immediate, and worth every bit of the process.

Rate: $265 per person Includes lunch. Transportation not included — Nicholas will organize NYC carpooling for the trip to Princeton. Proceeds to benefit Takaezu Studio, Princeton University Art Museum & Brooklyn Ceramic Arts Tour

Group is limited to 8–10 participants.
