Finding Paradise, Finding Home: In Conversation with Dorothy and Benjamin

“Will that place be a paradise? Singapore!” was the theme song of a TV advert Singapore Airlines launched in Hong Kong in the year Dorothy was born. Seemingly a tourism promotion, the spot could also be read as an immigration advertisement. For the past one or two centuries, Singapore and Hong Kong have shared similar yet distinct histories. The instabilities brought about by war, the economy and geopolitics have found their way into our lives: In our shared experiences and in each of our family histories, there are always memories of migration or of homes that are now far away.

During their residency at DECK, Dorothy and Benjamin have been looking for the way home and stories of migration among the residents of Geylang. Where is the place where you can grow your roots? Will that be a paradise?

In this artist sharing session, Dorothy and Benjamin will share their past community-based creative projects—such as photo-audio walks in supermarkets, on boats and in national parks—and share the stories they learned during their residency at DECK.
