Find Your Light: Celebrate with New Art Center and Boys and Girls Club

Join New Art Center and the John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club of Newton for a series of workshops focused on creating art inspired by winter holidays! These workshops are for TEENS ONLY.

11/7 - Storytelling (with visuals)

Participants will reflect on their year with the question ‘What brought you light this year?’ in mind. This can be in the form of poetry, short stories, or essays. Using a template and the theme as a guide, participants will use illustrative visuals to complement their written piece. The finalized work at the end of the session will be laminated and on display throughout the New Art Center building.

11/14 - Collage

In this workshop, participants will be using mixed media techniques to design a votive. Each votive will be representative of the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa (unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith) recognized during Kwanzaa on the kinara. Through individual and community reflection, participants will use magazines, 3D materials, and found materials for each representation that will be displayed in the New Art Center building.

11/21 - Zine-making

Holidays are unique to the individual and their community traditions. Through the art of Zine-making we will be exploring a factor of the season that gives you the warm fuzzies. For some it’s when their neighbor decorates their house to the nines, for another it’s seeing the menorah lit in the window, or maybe it’s just the buzz of all the people in the stores searching for the perfect gift for a loved one. With a single sheet of paper, we will create a miniature ‘book’ that will then be copied and available to explore in a library within the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club.
