REEL is an immersive, hands-on after-school filmmaking program dedicated to empowering inner-city youth through storytelling and creative expression. Our students gain the unique opportunity to write, produce, and premiere their own short films while learning the fundamentals of filmmaking from concept to screen.

Info: Moderated by Yhá Mourhia Wright, this is not a highlight reel of credits and premieres. This conversation goes underneath all of that, into the how: the specific moment someone let them on set, the mentor who finally returned an email, the year nothing seemed to be working. That is where the real map lives, and that is exactly what Find Your Crew is here to uncover.
Just as important, our panelists will give you the raw, unfiltered experience of the actual on-ramps: what it truly looks like to PA on a set, assist at a festival, or volunteer your way into a room like theirs, and exactly what they look for when they bring someone new in. They will get specific about where to start this week, not someday: showing up to a local festival as a volunteer, following and reaching out to Bay Area production companies and nonprofits doing this work, finishing and submitting a short (even a phone shot one) to a festival like REEL Film Fest, and more!
