About this Event
What to Expect
Bukit Brown Cemetery is the first Chinese municipal cemetery, opened in 1922. It served a major role in the creation of a unified Singaporean Chinese identity as those who sought to be buried in the cemetery came from all walks of life, and saw Chinese regardless of origin or dialect group being buried alongside each other. Some of the oldest and most detailed graves in the country can still be found in the cemetery. Come on a trail to "meet" not just prolific Singaporean pioneers who rest here, but also the caretakers who maintain the cemetery to this day!

Andrew is a Brownie. For Singaporeans who think that Bukit Brown Cemetery is ‘dead’, He wants to change your mind and show you that the cemetery is very much alive, bursting with stories of the past and the present both in the day and at night! Even though he has visited Bukit Brown for over a decade, he still finds the place to be fascinating each time he visits. From bringing previously hidden graves to light to finding pop-up shrines, the place is full of stories and secrets and there is something new to learn every time!
Andrew will also highlights the work of people like Soh Ah Beng, a caretaker from Lorong Halwa village who has been tending to Bukit Brown for over 50 years. Soh is one of the 16+ tomb keepers at the cemetery, dedicated to removing overgrown vegetation, rebuilding fallen or damaged tombs, and even helping to pray for those whose families cannot visit during Qing Ming.
