Experience silent film as it was meant to be seen. "Final Take: The Valley of Silent Men with Live Score by Andrew Earle Simpson" is a special closing event for the exhibition "Second Take: Histories of Film in the Rockies." This immersive evening celebrates the early days of filmmaking in the Canadian Rockies through live music, archival storytelling, and historic cinema.
Internationally recognized silent film composer and pianist Andrew Earle Simpson will perform a live musical score to the 1922 silent film "The Valley of Silent Men." Simpson has presented silent film scores at major film archives, festivals, and cultural institutions, and will share insights into the research, restoration, and creative process behind bringing historic films back to life through music.
The evening will also feature a brief curator’s talk and slideshow by Elizabeth Kundert-Cameron, Director of Archives and Special Collections at The Whyte. Following the screening, audiences are invited to stay for a Q&A with Simpson and Kundert-Cameron. Drinks, light snacks, and a special 1920s-inspired cocktail will be available before and after the program, beginning at 6:30 pm. Guests are encouraged (but not required) to dress for the era.
