For the final event of the season, Outside In presents Manchester-based extreme-conditions adventure filmmaker and engineer Alex Stone. Fresh from his mission filming in sub-zero Norway, Alex will be giving us a behind the scenes look at his most recent project - retracing the steps of Captain Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition.Adventure filmmaker Alex Stone has spent weeks searching for elusive wildlife, sailed to remote islands and driven across continents - all as part of film projects. In this talk he takes us behind the scenes on some of his expeditions, discusses the difficulties he faced, the solutions he developed and how he started a camera accessory engineering company along the way.
For the past five years, Alex has been working on a biopic about Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition. He has recently returned from his latest trip to Norway and recounts what it’s like to shoot a film in sub-zero, blizzard conditions. What failed first, the camera or the crew?
Alex Stone is credited with the cinematography on short films, commercials, documentaries and features, but in more recent years has found himself drawn to projects in the great outdoors. He thrives on the challenges these unique project briefs present and the rewards they offer.
As part of his filmmaking, he has been fortunate to be involved in projects that have taken him to the most remote islands in the UK, glacial valleys in Norway and as far as Cambodia. In addition to extreme cold-weather shoots, Alex specialises in low-light, ultraviolet, infrared and thermal imaging - catching the things the human eye can’t see.
In order to solve problems he faced on set and in the wild, in 2020 Alex set up an engineering company that makes camera accessories. His products now power cameras in over 40 countries worldwide.
Outside In is proud to be partnered with Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports. The Brigham family have been supplying Manchester with outdoor supplies since 1933 when Frederick Ellis Brigham set up a business in the North-East of Manchester making hiking and cycling shoes. Now their stores can be found all over the country, with our local store based in Deansgate. The local team will be down from the shop for our event, along with magazines, vouchers and prizes.
