Featuring a trove of cherished songs, including “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “My Favorite Things,” “Do Re Mi,” “Sixteeen Going on Seventeen” and the title number, The Sound of Music won the hearts of audiences worldwide, earning numerous awards. The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, follows a free-spirited postulant, Maria Rainer (Julie Andrews), who serves as governess to the seven children of the authoritative Captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire Von Trapp family must make a difficult decision. Nominated for ten Academy Awards, the film won five Oscars, including Best Picture (Robert Wise), Best Director (Robert Wise), Best Film Editing (William H. The film has similar received high accolades from across the globe including a awards by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globes, and Writers Guild of America, to list a few. The film is recognized with numerous American Film Institute top listings and was selected in 2001 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.
