About the film:
Set in war-ravaged 16th-century Japan, this visually precise and thematically daring new drama is also the grandest whodunit of the year. Lord Murashige (Masahiro Motoki) turns against the tyrannical Oda (Bando Shingo), the warlord he once served, and soon finds himself besieged within the walls of his own castle. Isolated, Murashige is confronted with a series of mysterious crimes that bear the mark of divine judgement, shattering the fragile order of his court and plunging the fortress into paranoia. With Oda’s army closing in and a hidden traitor nearby, Murashige, together with a brilliant but dangerous strategist held prisoner in the castle’s dungeon, must unravel the truth before the castle falls. Adapted from Honobu Yonezawa’s prize–winning novel, The Samurai and the Prisoner is a meticulously crafted study of the many faces of terror from the director of Cloud and Serpent’s Path. 2026 Cannes Film Festival. In Japanese with English subtitles.
“Critic's Pick! A samurai picture that feels simultaneously classical and modern, austere and capacious, familiar and surprising.” – Ben Kenigsberg, The New York Times
