About this Event

The first film in the Samurai on screen season is Kurosawa Akira’s Seven Samurai, which is widely regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema.

Set in the Sengoku period during the late 16th century in Japan, the story follows seven samurai hired by peasants suffering under the plunder of bandit warriors. Together with the peasants, the samurai overcome differences in social standing, as well as their own human frailties and inner conflicts to cooperate and defend the village from the bandits' attacks.

Legendary Japanese actor Mifune Toshirō, who portrays the unorthodox samurai Kikuchiyo of peasant origin, brings the film to life through his strong personality and overwhelming presence.

Seven Samurai has influenced the work of other internationally acclaimed directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola, as well as Westerns and action films such as John Sturges’ Hollywood remake The Magnificent Seven (1961).

The screenings are in Japanese with English subtitles. Duration: approx. 207 mins (with 5 mins intermission)

Guests who are booked to attend the screening can also enjoy 10% off drinks at the Stand on their way in.
