Mark your calendars for a new screening of "Up From the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream" on October 22, 2024, at FREE event hosted by the Muskegon Heights Academy High School. Doors open at 5 PM. Admission is FREE.
The film follows the personal stories of African-Americans, now in their 80's and 90's who migrated north in the 1940's to the war factories of Muskegon Michigan. The soft dulcet tones of actress and American icon Cicely Tyson narrate the award-winning documentary, “Up from the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream” by brothers Jim and Rod Schaub. "The film is of historical significance to our community and adds historical value for students and families of Muskegon Heights", stated Heights Principal James.

This event is a Big Read Lakeshore Program, inspired the 2024 selected books: Dreamers, MexiKid, and Great Gatsby. All of these selected books are through guiding questions that center around the search for the American Dream.
