In celebration of Black History Month, Newport News Historic Services and the CNU English Department/Film Studies Program present a screening of "First Class" followed by a Q & A with writer/director Morgan McCoy Harris. The film explores the history of Hampton University while telling the remarkable story of James Apostle Fields, who self-emancipated, became a lawyer, and lived his later years in Newport News.
The film runs approximately one hour. Both students and community members are welcome for this unique opportunity to learn not just about a Virginia hero, but to meet his descendants, talk with the filmmaker, and learn about her creative and historical process.
The screening will be held in The Torggler Center's Lecture Hall. Admission is free.
